Women’s tennis falters again

The women’s tennis team lost its last match of the season Friday at home to Eastern Michigan University, its eighth consecutive loss.

Freshman Thisuri Molligoda and senior Evelyn Youel started things off strong in the doubles competition against Ani Gogvadre and Andrea Martinovska, but couldn’t finish and lost lost the match 7-5.

The freshman duo of Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko couldn’t get the win against Marie Mayerova and Giuliana Ansalon, falling by a score of 6-3.

Senior Abigail Dekkinga and Sophomore Brodie Walker put up a good match against Natalia Regaldo and Isabelle Dohanics, however lost the last doubles match of the season 6-4.

Potsi started off for the Huskies in singles competition by pushing the match at No. 1 to an extra set against Gogvadre, but lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In match No. 2, Molligoda was putting up a good amount of points against Mayerova, but also couldn’t get the win and lost 6-4, 7-6.

Walker got the first and only win for NIU in the match at No. 3. Both sets were pushed to advantage sets against Martinovska, but Walker won 7-6, 7-5.

Youel couldn’t use the momentum that Walker brought in match No. 4 to her advantage as she dropped the match against Ansaloni 6-2, 6-4.

Dekkinga dropped match No. 5 to Regaldo in their second meet of the afternoon 6-0, 6-2.

In the last match of the season, Slisko didn’t end things the way she wanted to as she fell to Alejandra Almonyra 6-3, 6-4.

“We need to take advantage of opportunities,” said Head Coach Tanya Mahefu. “It was just small points that seperated the match.”

The Huskies ended the season with a 5-17 overall record and didn’t win a conference game in eight tries.
