SA statement regarding concluded lawsuit

The Student Association Senate settled its lawsuit with former Senator Sid Kincaid with surplus funds made from the Office of Students’ Legal Assistance.

Kincaid filed the lawsuit April 29, 2016, for an alleged violation of the Illinois Open Meetings Act that occurred during an impeachment process, according to a Wednesday Student Association press release.

The $7,500 in attorney’s fees came from Students’ Legal Assistance, which had originally designated the funds for another purpose but was no longer needed, according to the press release.

“As the Student Association did not want to take money that had already been earmarked for student organizations, these attorney’s fees were funded through a surplus of funds that Students’ Legal Assistance had,” according to the press release.

The lawsuit concluded Friday with Kincaid and SA reaching an agreement but didn’t place guilt onto either party.

The SA remains committed to transparency and being the voice for the student body, according to the press release.

“Now that this matter is settled, the Student Association Senate looks forward to moving on

to other matters that directly impact our students,” according to the press release.
