DeKALB — The Track and Field team competed in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday through Saturday at the Drake Relays. With over 20 schools in attendance, the Huskies had an opportunity to check out top competition from around the country.

Head Coach Connie Teaberry said she was happy for the opportunity to compete in such a big event.

“The Drake Relays is a historic and very competitive competition,” Teaberry said. “Our athletes are competitive and talented, and I feel on paper we match up to any team present.”

Junior jumper Jehvania Whyte took a break from setting the schools triple jump record and recorded a third-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 13.06 meters. The All-American has previously set the school triple jump record 10 times this season.

Senior jumper Chennel Palmer also jumped her way to a top-10 finish. She earned a tie for 10th place in the high jump with a score of 1.65 meters.

The Huskie sprint medley relay team turned in a ninth-place finish with a time of 3:58.25 minutes. The medley team consisted of three freshman sprinters: Khenadi Jones, Kishona McCray and Norr Fineganand senior sprinter Doshawn Franks.

Sophomore Hurdler Neshay Curtis came up with a big personal record in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:00.76 minutes was good enough to earn sixth place in the event.

Freshman distance runner Ashley Tutt performed well in the 5,000-meter run with a fourth-place finish at a time of 16:37.24 minutes. Her time in the 5,000-meter run was good enough for second all time in NIU Track and Field history behind former Huskie Kelsey Hildreth.

Tutt wasn’t the only distance runner with a top ten finish over the weekend. Senior distance runner Lorena Martin continued her season with a 10th place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.10 minutes.

Teaberry said the team is looking forward to the opportunity to compete at home.

“The Huskies Classic will allow the community to see the athletes first hand, volunteer if they chose and interact with the athletes, Teaberry said. “We are extremely excited to be at home this weekend.”

With only one meet to go until the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, the Huskies will turn their focus to home. NIU will host the Huskie Classic 3 p.m. Thursday in DeKalb. This meet is the teams first and only home meet of the season.
