Breaking: Multiple Police Respond to Incident Near Greek Row

Police officials requested residents to steer clear of West Hillcrest Drive.

At 4:51 a.m. a Safety Bulletin regarding an incident occurring at the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive. It is unclear why police made the request at this time; however, a 9:41 a.m. follow up message indicated police activity within the targeted area has been cleared.

NIU Campus Police were not immediately available for comment.

UPDATE:

An apartment complex at 1024 W. Hillcrest Drive was evacuated after police officials received a call about a man threatening another person with a gun.

Police officials responded to the call at 3:48 a.m. and were met by the sound of a semi-automatic pistol slide once they entered the building, according to a March 27 DeKalb Police Department press release.

Zane Collins, 25, of DeKalb was spotted by officers at the top of the stairs but fled into an apartment.

Residents inside the apartment Collins ran into were evacuated and told police officials the apartment was empty. Officers obtained a search warrant to enter the dwelling because they “observed a shadow of a person pacing inside,” according to the press release.

The DeKalb County Special Operations Team entered the apartment around 8:30 a.m. and found Collins barricaded in a bedroom.  A 9 mm handgun, cannabis and cannabis related contraband were found during a further investigation of the apartment

Collins was arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon without a FOID card and possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

Police officials continue to investigate the incident and anticipate further arrests related to drugs found in the apartment.
