DeKalb— The DeKalb Police Department is investigating a threat made to area schools.
Jamie Craven, superintendent of DeKalb School District 428, sent a message at 8:39 a.m. about a social media threat against DeKalb High School, Huntley Middle School and Clinton Rosette Middle School.
Students are being held in their classrooms as more information is being gathered.
Craven said parents and guardians will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
Update
The DeKalb Police Department became aware of a social media post around 7:15 a.m. Friday that threatened the city’s high school and middle schools.
School District 428 issued a soft lockdown and law enforcement officers were stationed at each campus, as they conducted an investigation into the post’s credibility, according to a Friday DeKalb Police Department press release.
The investigation led authorities to a thirteen-year-old student enrolled in the district, who was identified as the person who sent the message. The teen told police officials he has seen a similar message in another state and that his post was a hoax without any credible threat of violence, according to the press release.
“Authorities are continuing to follow up on this matter to ensure a thorough investigation, that there are no weapons linked to this juvenile offender, and that his behavior is appropriately addressed,” according to the press release.
