Gymnastics wins second consecutive meet

The gymnastics team beat the Eastern Michigan University Eagles in its meet on the road Friday, marking the first time this season they have earned wins in back-to-back weeks.

The Huskies’ third win on the season was scored 195.425-194.900 in favor of NIU and was the second time they broke the 195-point threshold this year.

Morreale said he felt his team fought through adversity and was able to get through that to come out on top.

“I didn’t see anything different, we were just more comfortable,” Morreale said. “We had a little bit of a rough start on bars, and I think that made the girls a little bit angry. They dug down deep, and on the next three events, we hit at a really good clip. We didn’t have anybody fall today, so we didn’t have to count a miss, which is always a sign of a really good meet.”

Junior Anna Martucci had another successful outing on the floor, posting an outstanding 9.900.

“I think the team saw what they were capable of today. Anna Martucci had her third 9.900 today, and it was her birthday. It was her third 9.900 in six weeks which is pretty impressive.”

Senior Andie Van Voorhis led the way on the balance beam with a brilliant performance, as she helped close out Eastern Michigan University.

“The beam squad, led by Andie Van Voorhis, went 9.875 as the first one up for us,” Morreale said. “Beam-wise, we just put the meet away on the last event, which was really cool to see.”

The Huskies will be back in action 2 p.m. Sunday in Chicago to take on the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, which is the quickest turnaround for the gymnastics team this season.

“We’re hoping to come back from this with some confidence and put another one of these scores up there,” Morreale said. ”On a double-meet weekend, especially when we get off to a good start like this, let’s double up instead of taking it for granted.”
