DeKalb — Junior jumper Jehvania Whyte continued her strong start to the season as she broke her own school triple jump record for the third week in a row, jumping 12.57 meters Saturday at the Black and Gold Premier in Iowa City.
Head Coach Connie Teaberry said she praises Whyte on her dedication to improve this season.
“She just decided this year that this is a goal she has to represent her country and to represent NIU,” Teaberry said. “She’s actually made a lot of sacrifices with her nutrition, her study habits, time managements and her workouts to give everything she has.”
For the Huskies, the day was filled with highs and lows as they were able to win four events, including senior jumper Chennel Palmer getting the win in the high jump with a final jump of 1.68 meters.
Freshman distance runner Mackenzie Callahan placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.04, earning her first career collegiate win. Sophomore distance runner Melissa Ricci finished close behind with a fourth place finish, running a 2:18.93.
The freshmen continued to take a step forward as freshman jumper Kenyae Majors placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.61 meters. Freshman distance runner Maggie Cavanaugh placed fourth in the finals of the one-mile run with a time of 5:23.68.
Sophomore hurdler Remy Amarteifio took home first place in the 60-meter hurdles after running a 8.51 in the finals.
Senior runner Doshawn Franks placed first in the 600-meter run with a finals time of 1:34.79.
Senior runner Kedisha Dallas tallied another top-three finish as she came in second in the 200-meter dash, running a finals time of 24.55.
“The route that we’re going right now, we can’t complain,” Teaberry said. “We’ll keep plugging away at it each weekend, their mindset’s good. They’ve been focused. They’ve been competitive. They’ve been warriors.”
With three weeks until the Mid-American Conference Championship, the Huskies will turn their focus to a match Saturday as they travel back to South Bend, Indiana, for the Meyo Invitational.
