City council to hear 2nd parking read
December 11, 2017
DeKALB — The Dekalb City Council will discuss parking and regulation changes Monday that would prohibit on-street parking on Crane Drive .
DeKalb Police Department officials proposed the Safe Streets Initiative to the city council in November as part of a plan to regain the northwest corridor from the spike in criminal activity and gun violence.
If passed, the north side of Crane Drive will become a permanent no-parking zone, and the south side would not be available to park from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The three streets located on the east side of Russell Road would be converted to 24-hour resident parking only on the south side, including resident parking permits. Charles Street and High Terrace would be converted to resident parking only.
Those who violate the parking ordinance would be towed.
Approving Phase I of the initiative does not require implementation of later phases, which will be presented separately.
In addition to discussing the parking changes, the city council will also review funds for the 2017 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
The DeKalb Police Department applied for the $16,014 grant in June 2016, which targets gang- and drug-related crimes.
The grant program provides funding to state and local government to support a range of program areas including law enforcement crime prevention, drug treatment and drug enforcement, according to U.S. Department of Justice website.
City staff recommends approval of the agreement with DeKalb County, according to a memo from City Manager Anne Marie Gaura and Police Chief Gene Lowery to the city council.
