December 4, 2017
DeKALB — The wrestling team opened its dual schedule Saturday at the Indiana Duals and finished with two losses.
The Huskies (0-2) struggled to get rolling against the Indiana University Hoosiers and the Cleveland State University Vikings. The team was defeated by Indiana in its first dual of the day and suffered another loss to Cleveland State in the second.
Saturday morning – Indiana
Redshirt junior Alijah Jeffery and redshirt sophomore Caleb Gossett were the only Huskies to score in the team’s defeat by the Hoosiers. The Huskies did not compete at a high level against the Hoosiers, as they lost eight of 10 matches.
Jeffery defeated Garrett Pepple of Indiana by decision 3-0 at 133 pounds. Once Jeffery won his match against Pepple, the Huskies didn’t win until the 285-pound match.
Gossett posted a 12-6 victory over Fletcher Miller of Indiana by decision.
Jeffery and Gossett led the Huskies against the Hoosiers, scoring the only points in the dual. The Huskies struggled in the dual outside of those two.
“[Alijah] Jeffery and [Caleb] Gossett lead us today in attitude and execution,” Head Coach Ryan Ludwig said.
The Huskies outscored the Hoosiers in escapes 7-4 and reversals 2-0, but the Hoosiers led the Huskies in riding time 4-2 and takedowns 15-3.
Saturday afternoon — Cleveland State
The Huskies faced Cleveland State in their second dual of the day and lost 28-12.
Jeffery defeated Andrew Coghill of Cleveland State in a tech fall 18-3, while Gossett posted a 14-3 victory over Colin Kelly of the Vikings.
Jeffery is 9-4 on the season and leads the team in overall wins at 60. Gossett improved to 8-4 on the season and has a career record of 37-31 as a Huskie.
The Huskies managed to win three of the nine matches against Cleveland State and scored double the points of the last dual against Indiana.
Senior Quinton Rosser recovered from his loss to Indiana’s Devin Skatzka with an 11-8 victory over Gabe Stark of the Vikings at 174 pounds. Rosser is 9-6 on the young season.
Ludwig was disappointed with the team’s performance at the duals and said he hopes they can rebound in their next match after having two weeks off.
“We have adjustments to make, there is no other way to say it.” Ludwig said.
The Huskies will compete again 7 p.m. Dec. 16 when Central Michigan University comes to town for NIU’s home opener at the Chick Evans Fieldhouse.
