Baller Breakdown: Levi Bradley

By Khobi Price

Name: Levi Bradley

Hometown: Milwaukee

When you started playing: Third grade

Favorite sports team: Green Bay Packers

Athlete idol/role model: Kevin Durant

“[He was a] skinny kid, like myself,” Bradley said. “[Coming out of] college, he weighed 180 or 185 pounds. He was light and couldn’t bench press a lot. When I think of him, I think of myself and how I am. I was always a skinny kid who really couldn’t do much and couldn’t lift a lot. Somehow, [Durant] still managed to be arguably the best player in the league.”

Court strengths: Versatility

“My strengths are able to play multiple positions and guard multiple people,” Bradley said. “I always try to have an upper edge on my defender at all times.”

Court weaknesses: Offensive skillset

“I need to improve on my offensive skills,” Bradley said. “It’s small things [like] using my right hand more, dribbling and seeing people when they’re wide open that I can get better at.”

Favorite teammate: Jaylen Key

“I don’t have favorites; I love all my teammates,” Bradley said. “If I had to it’d be [Key]. He’s from Milwaukee, and that’s my best friend. We committed here together, so it’d probably be him. Other than that, I love all my boys equally.”

Interesting fact: Anime and Animal Planet fanatic

“I was that geeky kid growing up that loved Dragon Ball Z and Naruto,” Bradley said. “I still watch it to this day, I’m an anime freak. I love Animal Planet, too. I watch it every chance I get when I’m at home.”

Why you enjoy playing for NIU:

“I love the culture here,” Bradley said. “I love the style of play here. It’s rugged, it’s hard-nosed, and it’s a battle at all times. That’s helped me a lot just as a player, this system in particular. I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Bradley has been a steady contributor to the Huskies since he joined the program in 2015. He has ranked in the top-10 in minutes per game since his freshman year and currently plays the second most amount of minutes per contest this season with 28.9 minutes.

He’s averaging 15.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 0.4 blocks per game while shooting 49 percent from the field. He’s the only player on the roster to rank top three on the team in points, rebounds, blocks and steals per game.

Head Coach Mark Montgomerysaid he knows Bradley will be one of the team’s best scorers, impactful rebounders and most versatile players. Montgomery said leadership is an aspect of the game Bradley will need to exhibit for the Huskies to have a successful season.

“He has to have leadership, he’s a junior,” Montgomery said. “He’s started games the last two seasons, so his leadership is going to be valuable to this team. When you’re a junior, you have to bring it, and we expect Levi to lead us in a lot of different categories this year.”

The Huskies will look to bounce back from their latest loss when they face the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils for a home game 12 p.m. Saturday at the Convocation Center.
