The Chicago Bulls Weekly Rundown: Week 4

Guess who’s back? Back again! Bobby’s back! Hide your friends!

I say hide your friends because the Chicago Bulls are as horrendous as pre-season predictions had them being. Also, with Bulls’ forward Bobby Portis returning to the Bulls after his eight-game suspension, the United Center may not be the safest establishment in the Chicago-land area.

I’m joking, kind of. But, I digress. It’s time for my weekly Bulls’ rundown.

Portis made his triumphant return to the court in the Bulls’ first game of the week in a tight loss against the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 7. He wasted little time in proving he’s more than worth the headache he’s caused the team over the past few weeks.

He recorded a 21 point, 13 rebound double-double to go along with four assists off of 61 percent shooting from the field and 60 percent shooting from three-point range in only 24 minutes of play. He had a game-high +10 plus-minus, displayed an improved jump shot and was easily the Bulls’ best play for the night.

“Bobby gave us a great lift out there,” said Bulls’ Head Coach Fred Hoiberg, according to an Nov. 7 ESPN article. “He played with great emotion. He went out there and gave us energy when we needed it.”

Unfortunately, his great play was all for nothing as the Raptors defeated the Bulls 119-114, after Raptors’ guard Demar Derozan knocked down two clutch free throws to push the game out of the Bulls’ hands.

The Bulls returned back to Chicago and played their lone home game of the week against their division-rival Indiana Pacers, Nov. 10. The Pacers blew the Bulls out 105-87 in a game where the Bulls never had the lead.

Portis continued his strong play with a 20 point, 11 rebound double-double off the bench. Bulls’ guard Kris Dunn has his best game of the season with 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Bulls’ guard Justin Holiday had a rare efficient shooting night with 14 points while shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-5 from three-point range.

In the final game of the week, the San Antonio Spurs clobbered the Bulls on Nov. 11 for their worst loss of the season: 39 points.

The Bulls allowed the Spurs to shooting 51-for-85 from the field, 60 percent, 18-for-27 from three-point land, 67 percent and allowed eight players to score in double digits.

Portis concluded his strong week of play with 17 points, while shooting 45 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. Dunn had 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals with only one turnover!

The scare of the night came in the second quarter when Bulls’ 2017 first round draft pick Lauri “The Finnisher” Markkanen exited the game in the second quarter with an ankle sprain.

There aren’t any signs the injury is a serious one. Markkanen expects to play in the Bulls’ away game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Nov. 15, according to a tweet by the Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson.

The Bulls only other game this week is a home game against the Charlotte Hornets, Nov. 17. Since OKC has the star studded trio of forward Paul George, forward Carmelo Anthony and 2017 MVP guard Russell Westbrook, and with the Hornets being carried by the sensational play of  All-Star guard Kemba Walker, I don’t see the Bulls picking up a win this week.
