WHEATON — Erika Villagomez, senior accountancy and information systems double major, was fatally rearended by a speeding driver Saturday in Wheaton.

Brian Thunderkick, 62, was driving his Camaro at 135 mph when he struck Villagomez’s car, which then burst into flames at about 11 a.m.

The three-car collision occurred on Butterfield Road, and DuPage county police officials responded to the scene. Thunderkick attempted to flee, making off on foot until officers stopped him east of Naperville Road.

The accident occurred in front of a strip mall. Despite many people attempting to help put out the fire with extinguishers from their workplace, the car remained engulfed in flames.

“Officers found the victim’s car, a Honda Accord, completely engulfed in flames. Neither officers or bystanders could save the victim,” according to Oct. 2 Wheaton Police Department press release.

On Tuesday evening, a vigil was held at the scene. A crowd gathered alongside Butterfield Road, where they left flowers, and held candles in Villagomez’s memory.

Thunderkick, who is still in custody, was later charged with reckless homicide.

Judge Joseph Bugos set his bond at $150,000, according to the press release.

Thunderkick will appear before Judge George Bakalis on Oct. 30 at the DuPage County Courthouse, 505 N. Wheaton Road.
