Police investigating fatal apartment fire

DeKALB — An apartment fire at the 800 block of Ridge Road resulted in the death of one resident early Friday morning.

The DeKalb Fire Department arrived at the scene of the fire at about 6:30 a.m. after receiving reports of heavy smoke coming from a one-bedroom apartment, which is managed by Hunter Properties. The victim was found unresponsive inside the bedroom of the apartment. Fire department officials were able to control and stop the fire in 15 minutes.

The resident, whose identity has not been released, was taken to the Kishwaukee Hospital, 1 Kish Hospital Drive, and pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.

A firefighter that responded to the fire was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the DeKalb Fire Department with assistance from the DeKalb Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s office. Fire units from Maple Park, Malta, Sycamore, Shabbona and Cortland assisted in the extinguishing of the fire.

The fire originated and was contained to the kitchen, according to an Oct. 27 DeKalb Fire Department press release. No other apartments in the complex were affected by the fire, and the building has since been ventilated of smoke and dangerous gases.

The DeKalb Fire Department and Kishwaukee Hospital did not respond to request for comment. Hunter Properties representatives were not available for comment.
