Delta Zeta tugs dynasty ends after 10 years; Sigma Kappa takes crown

DeKALB — Sigma Kappa won its first tugs championship in 12 years after defeating Sigma Sigma Sigma in a close match Saturday.

Reigning champion Delta Zeta was defeated by Sigma Sigma Sigma Friday to assure a new champion would be crowned.

Anthony Baca, senior finance major and a Sigma Kappa coach, said Sigma Kappa showed a lot of heart in the tournament.

“We are building a foundation for years to come; the girls really wanted it, and it showed this entire tournament,” Baca said.

Friday

In match one, Delta Gamma took on Sigma Sigma Sigma. Sigmas came out with the win after taking Delta Gamma out in two rounds of action.

Alpha Sigma Alpha went up against Alpha Phi in match two, and Alpha Phi tugged it out both rounds to beat Alpha Sigma Alpha.

In match three, Delta Zeta, who had previously held the crown for 10 years, faced Sigma Sigma Sigma. Sigma Sigma Sigma defeated Delta Zeta in round one. The second round was an extremely tough battle for both teams, but Sigma Sigma Sigma ousted Delta Zeta to ensure they would not repeat their 10 year reign.

Carly Reilly, junior business administration major and member of Sigma Sigma Sigma, said the team was overlooked from the beginning.

“It feels amazing to defeat Delta Zeta, many people thought of us as the underdogs, and we proved them all wrong,” Reilly said.

Sigma Kappa took on Alpha Phi in match four and defeated Alpha Phi in the first two rounds. With the win, Sigma Kappa advanced to the championship round against Sigma Sigma Sigma.

“The team and I are absolutely stoked,” said Kaylee Jawoisz, sophomore dance major and member of Sigma Kappa. “When you work hard enough, you know what you’re capable of.”

Saturday

Before the championship match, Alpha Phi took on Delta Zeta to determine third and fourth place. Delta Zeta defeated Alpha Phi to take third place, and Alpha Phi placed fourth.

Alpha Sigma Alpha and Delta Gamma faced off to see who would place fifth and sixth. Alpha Sigma Alpha defeated Delta Gamma and took fifth place, while Delta Gamma claimed sixth place.

The day concluded with Sigma Kappa facing Sigma Sigma Sigma in the championship match in two ropes, with Sigma Kappa winning it all. This is also Sigma Sigma Sigma’s first time finishing second in Women’s Tugs.
