Presidential cabinet member to be chosen next week

The nominee for the vice president of Administration and Finance position will likely be selected and announced sometime next week, acting President Lisa Freeman said during a University Council meeting Wednesday.

The three candidates for the position have visited campus to meet with NIU community members and share their vision. Further background checks on the candidates are being conducted, Freeman said during the meeting.

“I have received feedback from the committee and the university community in the process of doing additional records checks and finishing the human resources process,” Freeman said.

Among the nominee’s duties would be acting as head of the Division of Administration and Finance, which “oversees the budget office, facilities, risk management, compliance and other business operations,” according to the division’s website.

Alan Phillips, former vice president of Administration and Finance, retired from the position in March.

Student Association working for DACA students

Emily Schmitt, Student Association Chief of Staff, and SA Senate Speaker Christine Wang reported on behalf of SA at the meeting and discussed new initiatives for undocumented students.

Wang said the SA is working on finding a way to allow undocumented students to run for SA Senate, as current members are required to provide a social security number so officials can run background checks.

“We don’t think that’s fair,” Wang said. “These students pay tuition just like the rest of us, so we’re looking into fixing that.”

Schmitt and Wang also mentioned the SA is in the early stages of working with the Alumni Association to put together a scholarship for undocumented students. This is all in response to the administration showing support for students who are Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients in September following President Donald Trump’s announcement that the program will cease to exist.
