Holland brings youth to classic hero role

With great fandom comes great responsibility, a responsibility both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment don’t take lightly. In 2015, Sony announced another reboot of the Spider-Man franchise as part of their new partnership with Marvel.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” swung into theaters July 4 and has already grossed over $582 million worldwide, according to IMDb.
After joining forces, the two companies set out on a mission to cast a fresh face to play the heroic webslinger, hoping to take a different angle on the already familiar comic book. Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker in the first three films produced in the early 2000s and Andrew Garfield recently portrayed the hero in the last two films, “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
Tom Holland seems like an obvious choice to play the dorky boy-next-door with superhuman abilities, and Sony’s decision to cast him was received well even before the film hit the big screen, according to a Feb. 9, 2015 Variety magazine article.
Holland brought something to the character neither Maguire or Garfield did: youth. Unlike his predecessors, Holland is the only actor who is closest to Peter Parker’s age. Holland is 20 years old and plays a 15 year old Parker, while Maguire was 25 and Garfield was 29.
Holland turned fans’ attention to the fact Spider-Man wasn’t a man; he was a kid. He was a pre-pubescent bookworm from Queens who crushed on cute girls and got into trouble along the way.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” showed an entirely different side of Peter Parker’s life: the real one. Even though he was bitten by a radioactive spider and developed superhuman abilities, he still has trouble working up the courage to get a date for the dance.
The film highlights Spidey’s powers in a different, more enthusiastic light than the previous films. Climbing up national monuments and swinging from building to building is exceptionally cool, and Holland’s Parker loved every minute of it. Viewers can feel his joy, innocence and optimism as he learns how to fine tune his powers in front of their eyes.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is a funny, light-hearted film with an entire cinematic universe propelling it forward. As a standalone story, it stays true to the comics while exploring a new, angsty side of Parker that audiences have barely seen. As a vital piece of the larger Marvel narrative, it makes fans, including myself, incredibly excited for the next chapter in Spider-Man’s long, interesting journey.
