911 service and landlines experiencing outages throughout DeKalb

UPDATE: DeKalb and NIU community members can use the 911 service after yesterday’s connection problems have been resolved.

DeKALB | Members of the DeKalb and NIU community are experiencing connection issues when calling 911 as of this morning.

NIU Police Commander Donald Rodman said the problem is that people who call in to the 911 service cannot hear the operators, but the operators can hear the callers. Anyone on-campus in an emergency situation is advised to call NIU Police at 815-753-1212, according to an April 19 community awareness bulletin sent out at 11:34 a.m.

Customers with service providers U.S. Cellular and Verizon are experiencing the most issues, but other service providers are being affected as well.

The NIU Police Department is waiting on confirmation from service providers as to when the problem will be fixed, Rodman said.

At 10:30 a.m., the Division of Information Technology received reports of customers having trouble dialing in from cellular devices to campus landlines and dialing out from campus landlines to cellular devices, according the Division of Information Technology.

NIU Police and the Division of Information Technology said they will send out updates when the issue is resolved.
