DeKALB — The men’s golf team finished ninth place out of 15 teams in the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational over the weekend at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Indiana.

After shooting a 305 in Saturday’s first round, the team improved each round and bounced back with a 291 in yesterday’s third round.

“It was a very solid field with a lot of Big-10 opponents,” said Head Coach Tom Porten. “I was pleased with a lot of things this week.”

The Huskies were led by senior Charlie Cameron (71-77-74—222), who personally finished 26th overall and shot a one-under 71 in the first round to start off his week.

The Huskies also got a good performance from sophomore Paul Schlimm (72-79-72 — 223), who finished 30th overall in the field competing as an individual and finished one shot behind Cameron.

Porten said the team struggled at the Kampen Course and no one was able to score consistently outside of Cameron throughout the week.

“Other then Charlie, we didn’t have anyone who was able to pick up the slack,” Porten said.

Over the years, Porten previously highlighted the challenge of playing at the Kampen Course and knows it can be a challenge for his team. The Huskies finished 12th of 15 teams last season in the same event.

“We just have to regroup and get ready for next week at Ohio,” Porten said.

With one week remaining before the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Huskies are looking to make necessary adjustments to contend for the championship and give themselves a chance to qualify for the Division One National Championships at their home course of Rich Harvest Farms, 2330 Granart Road in Sugar Grove.

The team will play their final regular season at the Robert Keppler Classic Saturday and Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. This is the first time the Huskies will participate in this event.
