DeKALB  Men’s Tugs begins this week, starting off with a matchup against Omega Delta vs. Alpha Kappa Lambda.

Last year’s tournament ended with Phi Sigma Kappa finishing in first place, Sigma Alpha Epsilon in second place and Sigma Alpha Mu in third place. Phi Sigma Kappa has won four championship titles in the past five years.

Jake Demars, Phi Kappa Theta member, is serving as captain for the first time. Demars leads a team of 20 men: nine on each ropes with two alternates. The men have been training preceding winter break, Demars said. They train three times per week leading up until Tugs week.

Demars said his team has changed up their traditional way of tugging and has been working on getting faster and building team chemistry.

Demars said he hopes to beat Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a team of tuggers who beat the men last year.

“Hopefully, we’ll get a championship this year,” Demars said.

The first event begins at 3:30 p.m. Monday and goes until Saturday, without a Friday event, taking place on the east side of Huskie Stadium. Go to niu.universitytickets.com to purchase tickets.
