DeKALB — Women’s basketball (16-5, 9-1 Mid-American Conference) overcame its fourth double-digit defecit of the season to defeat the Western Michigan University Broncos (14-7, 5-5 MAC) Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Huskies outscored Western Michigan by 12 in the fourth quarter to win the game, 67-62, on NIU’s annual Alumni Day.
“I think that’s just one we had to grind out and come out on top at the end,” Head Coach Lisa Carlsen said. “There were big plays down the stretch on both ends, offensively and defensively, and we put ourselves in a position late to knock down some key free throws and come up with some key defensive boards.”
Senior forward Cassidy Glenn, senior guard Ally Lehman and sophomore forward Courtney Woods combined for 55 of the 67 points scored by the Huskies. Woods now has 10 games this season where she has scored at least 20 points. Lehman recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.
A large part of the Huskie’s fourth quarter rally was the late-game play of Glenn, who scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter.
The Huskies outscored the Broncos in the fourth quarter and held them to season-low of 62 points. They went on a 12-3 run in the final minutes of the game to secure the victory, which adds another win to a record which still sits atop the conference.
Carol Owens, NIU Athletics Hall-of-Famer and 1990 All-American, joined close to 40 alumni members in attendance for the celebration of the 60th season of NIU basketball. This was the program’s largest attendance number for this event since the 2011-12 season.
The Huskies will be back on their home court when they host the Central Michigan University Chippewas (16-6, 8-2 MAC) 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Convocation Center.
