An 18-year-old DeKalb High School student was killed in a car crash Tuesday night, according to a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Officers from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call Tuesday night about a car accident involving four vehicles on Route 38 East of Peace Road.
Johnathon Ode, DeKalb High School senior, was driving east when he and his passenger were struck by John Yanni, 25, of St. Charles, who was traveling west. Ode was pronounced dead on the scene.
Michele Albano, DeKalb High School principal, said she did not know Ode well because it was her first year as principal, but she saw him almost every day entering the school. She said he was a very well-liked, well-respected student.
“This is a true loss for the Barb family,” Albano said. “It’s definitely left a black cloud over the staff as we mourn the loss of Johnathon.”
Ode’s father and stepmother are on staff at the high school. His father was not available for comment.
After investigation, Yanni was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane usage and was released from Kishwaukee Hospital, 1 Kish Hospital Dr., after being treated for minor injuries.
The other three drivers involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and were later released.
The accident is part of the ongoing investigation from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the DeKalb County State Attorney’s Office and the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office.
