History of the week: Manspreading hits Huskie Bus Line
January 25, 2017
Two years ago, the Huskies followed in Chicago’s footsteps as “manspreading” and improper commuter etiquette flooded the Huskie Bus Line.
Manspreading refers to people taking up too much room by sitting with spread legs.
According to the Jan. 25, 2015 Northern Star article, “Though manspreading has become an issue in Chicago, according to a Dec. 31 Chicago Tribune article, NIU’s bus services have not dealt with serious cases of this problem, according to Brett Williams, Student Association director of Mass Transit.”
Northern Star staff members rode the Huskie Bus Line routes to observe manspreading. According to the Jan. 25, 2015 Northern Star article, “11 route: Seven people put their bag on its own seat. One put groceries on a seat and another put his leg on the seat next to him.” On other bus routes, such as the 2R route, Northern Star staff members found similar offenders who refrained from moving to allow other passengers to sit.
