DeKALB — Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed three new members to NIU’s Board of Trustees and reappointed one trustee.
Joining the board are Dennis Barsema, Eric Wasowicz and Veronica Herrero. Rauner also reappointed Tim Struthers to the board. Two of the three new members have previous experience at NIU.
“We welcome our newest trustees and look forward to NIU benefitting from their expertise and insights,” said Lisa Miner, senior director of institutional communications.
Barsema is a graduate of the NIU College of Business. Both he and his wife funded the construction of the College of Business, created several scholarships and came back to NIU to teach entrepreneurship, according to a Jan. 24 email sent by President Doug Baker.
Wasowicz graduated from NIU in 1980 with a degree in computer science. He served as co-CEO for Greenbrier & Russel, a business firm concentrating on business intelligence, enterprise solutions and advanced technologies. Wasowicz also returned to NIU to teach entrepreneurship in the College of Business, according to the email.
Herrero is a chief program officer at One Million Degrees, an organization in Chicago that provides support to community college students that come from low income families, according to the email.
Struthers joined the board in 2015. He is a longtime resident of DeKalb and has had leadership roles in the community and at NIU, according to the email. Struthers holds a degree in finance and an MBA from NIU and is the president of First National Bank in DeKalb.
