DeKALB | The Holmes Student Center held karaoke Monday night for students to showcased their talents, while hanging with friends. This event is the first in a string of themed nights going on at the end of the semester at the Holmes Student Center.

Inside the Student Center’s Huskie Den, students enjoyed each other’s company through games and entertainment such as bowling and singing. Some were shy, others had no trouble getting on the stage and pushing through their time in the spotlight or giving it their all. The event was somewhat quiet, but there was a lot of space for everyone to spread out and enjoy themselves.

Austin Taylor, freshman physical therapy major, was in attendance with his two classmates. He did not know anyone participating in the event and was there to bowl and listen to music at the same time.

“We don’t really know anyone who is singing,” Taylor said. “We are listening to it as we bowl.”

Many in the audience were like Taylor – both enjoying karaoke and bowling. A variety of popular songs were performed from Alicia Key’s “All I Want Is You” to “I Want It That Way” by The Backstreet Boys. Those two songs are commonly known karaoke favorites but the event went beyond that and featured spanish-language favorites of student’s.

Luis Anzaldua Zambrano, freshman undecided major in the college of engineering, sang his karaoke rendition of “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys. Luis and his friend from class went up to the stage and the enthusiasm grew.

“This is a special event,” Zambrano said. “Anyone can go up and sing to have fun.”

Another relaxation theme is planned 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 1.
