Underdogs get knocked out of MAC Tournament

No. 4 seed Bowling Green State University and No. 3 seed Ohio University advanced to the semifinal round of the MAC volleyball Tournament Saturday.

After a first round upset by the Broncos, No. 8 seed Western Michigan University could not hold on against No. 4 seed Bowling Green State University Falcons in the second round of the MAC volleyball Tournament Friday at Victor E. Court in DeKalb.

Bowling Green won the match by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18). Western Michigan was an underdog to win the second-round matchup after beating No. 5 seed Ball State University in the first round.

The Falcons, who had a first-round bye, were led by senior libero Madeline Garda. Garda broke Bowling Green’s single-season record for digs by reaching 664 in the match.

Bowling Green advances to take on Miami University tonight at 5 p.m. on Victor E. Court.

No. 3 seed Ohio University also knocked off its underdog opponent Friday with a win against No. 6 seed Toledo.

The Bobcats played cleanly and beat the Rockets in straight sets (25-23, 25-14, 25-23). Jaime Kosiorek, Bobcats junior outside hitter, put up a match-high 14 kills and a hitting average of .333.

Ohio University will have its hands full as it takes on the No. 2 seed Huskies in the semifinal round tonight at 7:30 p.m. on Victor E. Court.
