SPRINGFIELD | Students reached 20 state legislators, 10 of whom were met with in person, during a lobbying trip facilitated by the Student Association.

Tuesday, eight students made their way to Springfield where they lobbied for higher education and Monetary Award Program grants.

The amount of legislators students interacted with exceeded that of the typical lobbying trip, making this one of the more successful trips, said SA Senate Speaker Christine Wang.

The students targeted legislators on MAP grant and higher education committees.

“We talked to a good mix of both Democrats and Republicans from both parts of the General Assembly,” Wang said. “It just seemed like everyone agrees that [the state of the budget] is a problem; it’s a travesty that’s happening.”

SA will be facilitating another trip to lobby for higher education and MAP grants that is open only to SA members Nov. 29 in Springfield.
