Students and faculty strap into local roller derby team
November 11, 2016
Barbed Wire Betties represent DeKalb County by competing in the Kishwaukee Family YMCA’s competitive Roller Derby League.
The all-female team races against the DuPage Derby Dames 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Huntley Middle School.
NIU faculty and students participate in Barbed Wire Betties. Andrea Drott, Wellness Promotion health educator, is team captain and league president. Members include Jill Tikkun, Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations instructor and NIU students Sierra Big John, Ashley Rodriguez and Jacob Burlingame.
In roller derby, two teams compete and race around a roller rink trying to earn more points. A selected group of five players will race at one time with one player designated as the jammer. Jammers score points by lapping the other team players. The four partners protect their jammer while being sought out by the opposite side.
Regular admission tickets will be available at the door for $12 and senior tickets for $7. Children admission is free.
