DeKALB | Sophomore forward Jaylen Key scored a career and game-high 17 points as men’s basketball (2-0) defeated Roosevelt University, 99-55, Monday night.

Four Huskies, including Key, scored in double-figures. Sophomore guard Laytwan Porter scored all 12 of his points on three-pointers, going 4-6 from beyond the arc. Senior center Marin Maric scored six of his 10 points in the first half and freshman guard Eugene German dropped 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the field.

NIU head coach Mark Montgomery said he wanted to give his freshman some more playing time in this game. German played 19 minutes and freshman guard Justin Thomas played 16 minutes. Thomas shot a perfect 4-4 from the field and finished with eight points.

“I thought our guys were locked in,” Montgomery said.  “We shared the ball. We took care of the ball. Jaylen Key got us off to an unbelievable start and then it was good to see the guards make some shots tonight and our fast break got going. So, [the team was] very unselfish. I thought our guys were focused, [had a] business-like attitude and we got the job done.”

The Huskies next game is 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Convocation Center against the University of Idaho.
