Organization of the week: Huskie Alternative Breaks

Q: What are your organization’s goals?
A: Huskie Alternative Breaks strives to raise awareness and educate students about social issues by providing an opportunity for hands-on service that inspires students to become active members of society and leaders in their communities.
Q: Why should people join your organization?
A: Through involvement in Huskie Alternative Breaks, participants will learn about social justice issues impacting our communities and world, help create social change, meet new people and create meaningful relationships and also grow as leaders and team players. These trips are incredibly impactful.
Q: What are some upcoming events you will be hosting?
A:
For the 2016-2017 school year there are five Huskie Alternative Break trips: one winter break, two spring break and two international trips.
The trips are as follows:
– Working alongside communities of people experiencing homelessness: Dec. 10 through Dec. 17.
– Social service trip to Guatamala: Working with local community members to build a home for a family in need – this trip is only open to graduate students Jan. 7 through Jan. 17.
– Helping families in search of a better life March 12 through March 18.
– America: The land of opportunity? Exploring socio-economic status March 12 through March 18.
– Rural education and sustainability in a developing country (international trip) May 14 through May 21.

A: Over 50 members

A: Students interested in participating in an Huskie Alternative Breaks trip can apply through our Huskie Link forms. Once accepted to a trip, participants will be connected with their site leader and gropu.

A: To be a member you must be an NIU student in good standing with the university and passionate about service.
