DeKALB | Donald Trump will take his seat in the White House as the 45th president of the United States.
The Republican presidential nominee beat out Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton with polls showing 279 electoral votes to her 228 electoral votes, according to the New York Times.
When polls were starting to close and votes were being counted at about 7 p.m. Tuesday night, Political Science Professor Matthew Streb said during a WNIJ radio interview Trump’s grasp on southeast states and close vote counts didn’t necessarily guarantee him a win as Clinton had “firewalls” up she could count on.
“I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and help so that we can work together and unify our great country,” Trump said in a speech this morning. “As I’ve said from the beginning, ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement made up of millions of hard working men and women who love their country and want a better, brighter future for themselves and for their family. It is a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds, and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people-and serve the people it will.”
President Barack Obama will address the election results and invite Trump to the White House Thursday, according to a statement issued by the White House.
