October 24, 2016
DeKALB | Bryan Stevenson, author of “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,” spoke about social injustice 6:30 to 8 p.m. today in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium.
Stevenson shared his experiences working for the criminal justice system and the poverty and racial discrimination associated with it, according to First- and Second-Year Experience’s webpage.
Following the presentation was a book signing where freshman engineering major Claudia Cruz got her copy signed.
“I’ve been waiting for weeks for Bryan Stevenson to come to NIU,” Cruz said. “I read this book and immediately loved it. It’s such a good read, and it was exciting to meet the man behind the incredible stories within the book.”
“Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” was published in 2014 and will be taught in first-year classes next academic year. The novel was selected for NIU’s Common Reading Experience.
