DeKALB | The Huskies look to carry the momentum into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. matchup with the Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis Jaguars in Indianapolis after getting their first win of the season last week at University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee Panthers.
The Huskies (1-4-2) outlasted the Jaguars in a game that saw the Huskies break the 1-1 tie with four minutes left in the game.
“I’m so happy for our guys, we finally caught a break,” Head Coach Eric Luzzi said. “We have had a lot of those breaks go against us in the first six games, so I was really happy that they persevered and kept plugging away.”
The Huskies got the equalizing goal from sophomore midfielder Kevin Rodriguez, who tied the game at one going into halftime.
Later in the game, senior defensemen Richard Hall broke the tie with only four minutes remaining, and the Huskies prevailed. Hall had a goal and an assist in the contest.
Milwaukee outmatched the Huskies in shots by nine. Luzzi said the Panthers were fast out of the gates but applauded his team for responding to Milwaukee’s strong initial attack.
“Milwaukee came out absolutely flying,” Luzzi said. “They were flying and were on top of us, but our guys defended well and didn’t give up dangerous chances.”
The Huskies will have a few days of practice before heading to Indianapolis Wednesday. The coaching staff said they see the positive signs from the team and feel the team was faced with a difficult schedule based on the quality of competition to open the season.
Luzzi said it is hard to measure progress when playing against elite competition, but there is always room to improve, particularly on defense.
“We haven’t been far off all season, and we had a very difficult schedule to start,” Luzzi said. “We’re going to keep plugging away and try to do what we’ve been doing.”
The Huskies will take on a Jaguars squad who have been outscored 22-2 on the season by their respective competition.
