Community to discuss pipeline addition

DeKALB | Save Our Illinois Land will be holding a panel on a second pipeline that could be built in DeKalb County 7 p.m. Thursday in the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St.

Save Our Illinois Land is a group of Illinois citizens who are concerned about the impact of pipeline infrastructure on Illinois’ land and waterways.

A tar sands pipeline runs through DeKalb County west of NIU. Enbridge, Inc., an energy delivery company based in Calgary, Canada, is considering building a twin pipeline that would parallel the existing line, according to a Save Our Illinois Land press release.

“I think the pipeline construction needs to be looked at thoroughly, and I would hope that Enbridge would present information regarding the safety of the pipeline,” said DeKalb Mayor John Rey.

Panelists will consist of landowners and community members from Wisconsin, where action has been taken to gain easements from landowners, according to the press release.

“I know there have been experiences with leaks from pipelines around the country, but I’m not aware of any local issues that we’ve had,” Rey said. “But I think it’s worth investigating.”
