Coloring is healthy for adults

By Marisa Pieroni

Adult coloring books may be the newest and healthiest obsession thanks to a recent explosion in popularity in mainstream media. Anyone can pickup crayons and enjoy the benefits of coloring and still feel like an adult, because coloring books are no longer just for children.

Renditions from “Swear Words Coloring Book,” a coloring book full of curse words, are shared on social media, Artist Chance the Rapper’s third solo mix tape was named “Coloring Book,” making a reference to the mainstream coloring obsession.

Coloring is a way to relax and unwind, and there’s science behind it. Coloring may actually lessen the action of one’s amygdala, which is a part of the limbic system that reacts to stress, according to PsychologyToday.com. As a result, many of the physical consequences of stress are reduced as well. The ancient practice of mindfulness, meaning to stay present, is practiced heavily during coloring — coloring allows for a release from the cross-chatter and lets the brain focus on the task at hand, rather than what happened yesterday or what is going to happen tomorrow.

Coloring books are not expensive. A coupon code can be used at the nearest craft store, or a coloring book can be found for $5 or less at discount dollar stores. If that still seems like too much, consider $5 to be a long-term investment. Do not underestimate the amount of time it takes to finish a coloring page, let alone an entire book.

This activity is fun and a favored pastime of children, but nowadays is fun for adults, so get coloring.
