Pass/Fail: Corn fest and weekends on campus

By Faith Mellenthin

Pass: Corn Fest bring college and community together

Corn Fest is DeKalb’s annual free festival ended this past weekend in downtown DeKalb. With all the basics of a fun festival — carnival rides, live music and greasy, fried foods — the fest has perfectly combined community with the pride of DeKalb. Sometimes it is easy to forget the NIU community is still inside a larger community.  Falling so close to the beginning of the semester, Corn Fest also serves as a ‘welcome to the community’ for incoming students.

Fail: Students should enjoy campus when not in classes

This past Friday was the first Friday of the semester, and there seemed to be nothing happening on campus. Friday is considered a weekday, however it is a shame there are not as many students around campus as there could be. NIU’s coffee shops and food places are still open. I love to spend a weekend at home, but if I can, I find it just as relaxing to sit at the Holmes Student Center with my peers. We have all winter to spend our days inside, so hopefully more people spend time on campus while they can.
