Hate crime added to LeGrier case
July 18, 2016
Days before Chicago Officer Robert Rialmo fatally shot former NIU student Quintonio LeGrier Rialmo engaged in racist text messages.
LeGrier was killed after “an incident with Chicago police” on Dec. 26, according to a Jan. 5 campus update. LeGrier, 19, died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
On Dec. 16, Rialmo exchanged text messages with a friend, according to the Chicago Tribune, stating:
“Worked with scotty last night,” Rialmo texted to his friend. “…it was fun.”
“U get any niggas,” texted the friend.
“Sort of lol…long story,” Rialmo texted.
LeGrier’s father is seeking damage under Illinois’ hate crime act stipulating that Rialmo began shooting LeGrier partially because of his skin color, according to a Chicago Tribune article.
LeGrier called 911 three times, asking for police to be sent to his house more than 15 times. The calls are terminated twice and at the end of the third call LeGrier asks the dispatcher to, “Stop f***ing playing with me.”
The fourth and final call is made by LeGrier’s father and police are dispatched after this call.
Following his death, LeGrier’s high school Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy created a scholarship in his memory, according to a Jan. 21 Northern Star article. LeGrier was a member of the Black Male Initiative at NIU.
