Chicago donut trend is easy summer treat
June 13, 2016
The garnished donut trend is taking over social media, but it’s easy to make your own from home by using a simple recipe.
Decorative donut shops are a trend popping up all around the greater Chicago area. To get your hands on one could cost a train ride, a pretty penny and a long wait in line.
What you will need:
• 1 can of Original Pillsbury Biscuit Dough (8 count)
• 1 quart of vegetable oil
• 2 cups of confectioners sugar
• 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
• 3-4 tablespoons of hot water
• Sweet or savory garnishes
What to garnish your donuts with:
• Mashed Oreos
• Gummy Worms
• Cereal
• Sprinkles
• Marshmallows
• Candy
• Pretzels
What to do:
1. Set the stove top to medium-high heat. Then, heat the vegetable oil on the stove in a large pot.
2. Set up your wire rack and then place two paper towels on the wire rack so you have place for the donuts after they come out of the hot oil. This is optional, but you can set up another rack beside it for a glazing station. Otherwise, you can you glaze where the oiled donuts are cooling.
3. Smoothly mix 2 cups of confectioners sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and, 3-4 tablespoons of hot water to make the glaze. I recommend mixing in a medium to large bowl so you can dunk your donuts in.
4. Separate the biscuits and cut circles in the middle of each one. Place the donuts two at a time into the hot oil until they are golden, then flip onto their other side and repeat. It should take about one minute for each side. Repeat these steps until all of your donuts are finished frying.
5. In between each set of donuts frying, glaze your donuts. Use a slotted spoon to scoop out both donuts and set them on the wire rack. Dunk the donut in the glaze on both sides and then set on the wire rack to cool.
6. Set a timer for 25 seconds before you can start garnishing your donuts. The time may vary depending on your garnish, for chocolate garnishes you will want to wait longer and for heavier garnishes you will want to take off more time so that it sticks.
7. These donuts are best enjoyed fresh—serve warm.
