Softball looks to lock up first place in MAC

With three games remaining in the regular season, softball (32-16, 12-8 MAC) will play its last series of the year this weekend as it takes on Central Michigan University.

The Huskies were scheduled for a non-conference matchup against Valparaiso University on Wednesday, but both games were canceled due to poor field conditions. NIU is coming off a three-game losing skid, all coming against the University of Toledo last weekend.

NIU went 5-5 in its last 10 games, but has managed to go just 4-4 at home this year.

“I think defensively we didn’t play sharp enough [against Toledo],” said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. “We needed to do a better job of getting off the field when we have to get outs.”

Central Michigan has a record of 22-24 and is in second place in the MAC West behind the Huskies. If the Chippewas are able to sweep the Huskies, they will take sole possession of the No. 1 spot in the division heading into the MAC Tournament, which is set to begin Wednesday.
