Softball (26-11, 6-3 MAC) finished up the weekend with a doubleheader against the University of Akron on Friday, splitting the series 1-1 before the final game of the series was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Game 1

Freshman pitcher Alex Frenz stepped up big in game one of the series, keeping the Zips scoreless for six innings. She pitched six innings in total, giving up one hit and striking out eight batters.

The game was deadlocked at zero until the seventh inning when Akron went up 1-0 to take the victory after a walk-off home run from sophomore Savannah Fruin with two outs remaining. It was Akron’s only hit of the game.

Game 2

Game two was a success for NIU, who bounced back to win by a final score of 4-2. The game was tied at one until the top of the fourth when the Huskies went ahead after a two-run home run from freshman utility player Abby Howlett.

Frenz picked up another victory in game two after pitching two innings and allowing just one run. The win moved her to 13-4 on the year.

The Huskies will return this week, starting with a midweek game against Ball State University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday in Muncie, Ind.
