NIU to hold oral histories of black lesbians lecture

NIU will hold a lecture entitled “Harvesting Honey: Oral Histories of Black Southern Women who Love Women” in honor of Women’s History Month 12 p.m. March 30 Holmes Student Center, Heritage room, according to a flier.

E. Patrick Johnson will host the lecture, according to the Center of the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality’s website. Johnson is a professor of Performance and African American studies at Northwestern University, according to Johnson’s website. Johnson wrote a novel entitled “Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South—An Oral History,” which was published in 2008.

Johnson will discuss his ongoing research of black lesbians as well as his difficulties learning their oral histories. Johnson will compare his personal experiences to those of his various subjects. Johnson’s subject’s stories will also be shared.

This event is free and open to the public. The event will be sponsored by the center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality and the Graduate Colloquium Committee.
