Professor appears on TV to present telepressure research

By Madison Kacer

Psychology Assistant Professor Larissa Barber appeared on Fox 32 Chicago today to discuss her research findings about the pressure college students feel to respond quickly to cellphone messages.

The interview discussed the phenomenon, dubbed by Barber as “telepressure,” which makes individuals feel the need to reply to text-based messages such as emails, SMS messages and social media outlets.

“They’re supposed to be convenient, but what we’re finding is people are treating it like a face-to-face conversation, like ‘I need to respond to you immediately,’” Barber said during the interview.

The issue leads to a lack of necessary relaxation time, Barber said, which can lead to higher stress levels.

Barber suggests individuals turn off their notifications, communicate with others about the individual’s cellphone use habits and use the do not disturb feature that some phones offer.
