Pass/Fail: Gender Inequality Task Force; Greeks dominate SA
March 31, 2016
Pass:
The issue of pay inequality between men and women has been a prevalent issue in the United States since the early 1900s. As more and more women entered the work place they began to see the discrimination they faced through the available jobs and the salaries earned compared to men. Women began to press harder and harder to prove that they too can obtain and hold the same jobs as men. Here we are in 2016 and pay inequality between men and women is still a problem. Just recently our very own biological sciences professor Virginia Naples came across a pay discrepancy of potentially up to $8,000, according to a Monday Northern Star article. This just goes to show that there is still a dispute regarding pay inequality between men and women in the work place. NIU plans to implement a salary equity task force to investigate this allegation which I believe is a good idea because it will shine light upon possible pay inequality. This just goes to show how a single person’s actions can make a positive impact.
Fail:
“I’m running to be the voice of those students” and by those students Alex Forgue is referring to the non-Greek students here on NIU’s campus. Less than ten percent of students are Greek, which leaves Forgue, one man, the voice of ninety percent of NIU’s students. The goal of any governments is to have a diverse platform of candidates. This diversity allows for fair and equal voicing amongst all tracks of students. However, with our current Student Association, we are not diverse. We are comprised of a mostly Greek board. Actions can be taken to shift the tides and bring in more involvement from non-Greek members but non-Greek students are not taking the opportunities of getting involved.
