The Black Student Union hopes to use its annual Rep Yo Org showcase as a recruitment and retention tool for freshmen.

Rep Yo Org is a showcase sponsored by BSU. At the event, different black organizations showcase what their organization is about. This non-competitive event strives to promote unity, according to the BSU website. The showcase will begin 7 p.m. Friday in the Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

Sophomore communication major Montgomery Proffit said Rep Yo Org is a fun event for students on campus to enjoy.

“It’s also a recruitment tool for freshmen to get more involved.” Proffit said. “What excites me most about Rep Yo Org is watching all the freshmen come through. They can look at potential organizations to join.”

Rep Yo Org is the first of three events the BSU will host in April. The second will be a mass meeting for the umbrella organizations within the BSU to discuss student concerns and the third event will be Harlem Renaissance 3.0, which will tribute the Harlem Renaissance through modern art, music, dance and poetry performances.

This year’s program will feature 21 organizations that fall under the BSU umbrella which include: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., SISTERS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Present Perfect Modeling Organization and ENVY Dance Troup.

BSU President Timi Adeboje said he’s excited to see how the black students come together to support their organizations.

“It’s especially helpful to many underclassmen who aren’t currently involved on campus to get familiar with an organization and hopefully [get] involved,” Adeboje said.

An after party is to follow the showcase at the Recreation Center. Tickets can be purchased via niutickets.com.
