Volleyball streaking into MAC tourney

Volleyball (16-10, 12-2 MAC) will take on Western Michigan and Bowling Green this weekend in its last two games of the regular season.

The Huskies have upped their winning streak to five games, winning 14 of its last 16 as the MAC Tournament approaches. They’ve swept through 10 of the 14 wins and conceded just one set in three of them.

“Overall we’ve improved on consistency, attack/hitting percentage and serving,” said junior outside hitter Mary Grace Kelly. “It’s why we’ve been so successful.”

Freshman Meg Wolowicz said coming into the season, the team had goals that included winning the Western Conference and winning the MAC and to be able to host it next year. With wins this weekend, the team will seal the MAC West.

“We’re very prepared,” Wolowicz said. “We’ve been doing a lot of film study along with working on team chemistry.”

Many of the team’s practices have focused on the importance of good hitting and staying consistent. The Huskies have gone 9-5 at home and 7-3 on the road, similar to their performance from last season.

“What we do in particular varies, but we always make subtle changes to get better each week,” said head coach Ray Gooden. “Fundamentals are always key for success but also doing things well for each other is an important component in building a successful team. We have to be consistent and fight, especially against Western Michigan. They are a good fighting team and they battle, especially at this time of year.

“Bowling Green has a very physical outside. They play a very physical style of volleyball and rely on their net play for success.”

Game one against Western Michigan will take place at 7 p.m. tonight at Victor E. Court and Game two against Bowling Green will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday in Bowling Green, Ohio.
