Dance fraternity unites teams

DeKalb | Dancing, good music and energy. The fourth annual Unity Show will bring all of that tomorrow.

Founded by Delta Phi Delta, the event will feature individual performances by several teams from campus, along with a “unity performance” at the end, featuring participants from all of the teams. There will be awards for the best dancer, best dance team, best contemporary dancer and more, all determined by penny voting.

“All the teams come together; it’s their one time to unite,” said Derrick Judkins, dancer and junior biology major. “It’s cool seeing all of them put together their choreography pieces and showcase their skills.”

Supremacy, Y.B.L., Envy Dance Troupe, Vanity and Final Warning, among other teams, will compete. The show will also feature a live DJ and interactive hosts.

“It’s been very exciting learning other teams’ styles of dancing,” said Raven Wynn, senior family and individual development major. “I’m really looking forward to performing styles that I haven’t before.”

Wynn is captain of Envy Dance Troupe and the NIU Silverettes poms team.

NIU alum Derrell Brown came up with the idea for the Unity Show four years ago and is still involved with the committee that organizes it.

“I wanted something that would bring the dance teams together and show unity among them,” Brown said. “A few years ago, there were a lot of rivalries in the dance community at NIU. It’s the fourth year of the show now, and I’m really proud of it.”
