‘No Ceilings 2’ lacks identity compared to past mixtapes

“Hallelujah, I’m the Hollygrove 2Pac” rapper Lil Wayne said with extreme confidence in his song, “My Name Is,” on the release of his mixtape, “No Ceilings 2,” last week. Unfortunately it sounds like Wayne is trying too hard to remake the first “No Ceilings;” maybe he’s running out of ideas.

The 24-song release features the New Orleans native rapping over some of the biggest hits in hip-hop, along with other original beats and well-known songs.

“No Ceilings,” the prequel to this tape, was released at the peek of his career on Halloween in 2008.. Lil Wayne’s flow on the first “No Ceilings” was flawless. Wayne’s career has changed drastically since then.

“No Ceilings 2,” which was released on Thanksgiving Day, is exactly what you’d expect from the washed-up rapper. It’s not bad, but I can’t see myself listening to any of these songs again.

Wayne’s rap career really doesn’t have an identity right now, and songs like “MillyRokk” are a bit painful to listen to.

My favorite songs on the tape are remixes of today’s radio hits, which is what made the first “No Ceilings” so great. Wayne raps over friend and rapper Drake’s “Jumpman,” “Big Rings” and “Hotline Bling,” as well as The Weeknd’s “The Hills,” all of which are definitely entertaining. Although the tape includes features from Future, Curren$y and Yo Gotti, overall, it’s nothing special.

Lil Wayne was once the undisputed king of the rap game, but it’s clear he’ll never reach that level again. “No Ceilings 2” will satisfy Lil Wayne’s biggest fans, but to me, it’s just another mixtape.
