Men’s soccer opens conference play with win over Bowling Green
October 5, 2015
Men’s soccer (6-2-0, 1-0-0 MAC) won its second game in a row last weekend, defeating Bowling Green 1-0 in overtime.
Both teams traded shots back-and-forth in the first period, but weren’t able to score a goal. NIU totaled seven fouls in the period versus five for Bowling Green. The Huskies had chances for a score in the second period, but weren’t able to capitalize on them.
Saves from both squads kept the game tied through yet another period. NIU outshot Falcons 16-12 and ended the game with 15 fouls to Bowling Green’s 11. The Falcons picked up six saves in the game to the Huskies’ four.
The game remained scoreless in overtime until the 96th minute when NIU took the lead on a game-winning goal by sophomore midfielder Giovanni Garcia, his first of the season.
“I told the guys earlier today that it is hard to predict how any game will unfold, particularly conference games,” said head coach Eric Luzzi, according to an NIU Athletics news release. “Sometimes there is a lot of football, sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes it is just set piece after set piece. The way it unfolded tonight, I thought there was a lot of soccer in the first half from both sides and statistically we were on top.”
NIU will return home to host Milwaukee at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the NIU Soccer and Track and Field Complex.
