Jackson is unbroken
October 5, 2015
After a seven-year hiatus from mainstream music, Janet Jackson is reminding listeners why she was so popular in the early 2000s with her latest album, “Unbreakable.”
The album, which was released Friday, contains 17 tracks and includes guest appearances from J. Cole and Missy Elliot.
Jackson opens the album with the smooth R&B track, “Unbreakable.”
“I live through my mistakes, its just a part of growing… .” Jackson sings in “Unbreakable.” She speeds up the tempo and creates the perfect sing-along track. Though the intro and outro have similar chill tempos, the tempo progression within the middle of the song make for a well-balanced tune.
“BURNITUP!” features another 00s hitmaker, Missy Elliot. The upbeat, catchy tune is reminiscent of one of my favorite songs from Jackson in 2008, “Feedback.” The collaboration of Elliot and Jackson with the fast paced beat will surely be a dance club favorite.
Jackson then slows it down in my personal favorite on the album, “Well Traveled.”
“I don’t know where this journey will end, ‘cause the world keeps calling me,” Jackson sings in “Well Traveled.”
She explains how far she has come in the past with her career, as well as coping with the loss of her brother, Michael Jackson, who died in 2009.
Her collaboration with J. Cole is spot on in “No Sleeep,” which was released over the summer and is the first single off the album. The slow sound and mellow tempo is fantastic in contrast to Jackson’s voice.
“You’re missing me, I’m missing you,” Jackson sings in “No Sleep”. “Whenever we meet, we ain’t gonna get no sleep.”
J. Cole complements Jackson’s sexy voice with his hard rap to create a genius balance.
There are multiple tracks on the album in which Janet shows fans how exceptional her voice can be. Her lyrics are polished and matched with a catchy beat. It is undeniable Jackson will solidify her role in music with a world tour already underway. As a whole, Janet Jackson creates a solid album with “Unbreakable.”
Although I am not Janet Jackson’s No. 1 fan, it’s hard to not like her vocal ability in her latest album. She is seasoned with her lyrics, and her voice is extremely smooth.
