Costumes we don’t want to see this Halloween

By Morgan Carrigan

The time is upon us again — dressing up as a character for a night, roaming around campus; however, you may spot a couple of costumes we have all seen one too many times.

These costumes are obvious and have a way of reappearing year after year, or they are down-right offensive. Avoid wearing these at all costs this year:

Caitlyn Jenner

This needs to be discussed. It’s 2015, and being transgender isn’t a thing to poke fun at. This costume is not clever. I am sure someone will think this get-up is hilarious, but no. Lets not even go there; I am begging you. It’s extremely offensive to the transgender community.

Playboy Bunny

The infamous mean girl quote is prevalent here: “In girl world, Halloween is the one day of the year when a girl can dress up like a total slut, and no other girls can say anything else about it.” Then you typically cue the Playboy Bunny get up. Please, no. Year after year women dress up as this character for a reason I’m unsure of. I mean, I get the idea, but it’s too cliche. We are in college, my friends. We can do better! Maybe try Hugh Hefner if you really want to do the Playboy thing.

Elsa from “Frozen”

Lets admit it, this was a key costume in 2014. The obsession with “Frozen” exploded last year. I felt like I was a townie of Arendelle last Halloween. With this in mind, I think we need to leave the ice princess in the past, or maybe save it for the toddlers who still watch it everyday.

Tom from MySpace

This was a clever costume at one point and extremely easy to make. Throw on a white t-shirt and you’re out the door. You are officially the creator of MySpace. But does anyone even use MySpace anymore? I also wonder if people can even recognize “Tom’s” picture from the famous social media site. Halloween can be stressful finding a costume, but throwing on a white shirt isn’t going to cut it this year.

Cat

I am sure you have seen a million cats running around in the past on this day — humans dressed like cats, that is. I had to get this costume out of the way first because it is inevitable not to talk about. This costume seems to be everyone’s great Halloween idea, which causes millions of people to transform into felines for the night year after year. Leave the ears at home, and try something spunky this year. Maybe try a crazy cat lady instead.
