Lovato sheds Disney star image in ‘Confident’

Demi Lovato has come a long way from the former child Disney Channel star.

The 23-year-old released her fifth album, “Confident,” on Oct. 16. It’s a surprisingly impressive album from the pop singer, featuring 11 songs that range from radio hits to slow, emotional ballads.

“Confident” is the first album released via Safehouse Records, a joint record label formed by Lovato and Nick Jonas. By working with her own record label, Lovato was able to follow her own artistic vision, and it really shows on the album.

The album starts with its two leading singles, “Cool for the Summer” and “Confident.” These pop songs are a strong beginning to the album; the rest is different and features a little bit of everything.

She caters to her audience with upbeat party tracks like “Old Ways,” but Lovato isn’t afraid to switch up her style on slower songs like “Stone Cold.” She also collaborates with Iggy Azalea on “Kingdom Come.” The last song on the album, “Father,” is a tribute to Lovato’s father who passed away in 2013.

One consistent thing on “Confident” is the emphasis on Lovato’s powerful singing voice. Although she’s one of the more recognizable names in pop music, it’s easy not to take her seriously. She’s known to many as a girl they watched on the Disney Channel growing up.

After listening to her fifth studio album, it’s clear that she is extremely talented. She’s gracefully shed the image of a child actress and created a successful career of her own.
